Low Carb Blue Cheese Dressing Recipe
One of the best things about eating low carb is that most types of cheese fit into the diet! If you are a fan of blue cheese, you will love this recipe! This keto blue cheese dressing is made by adding avocado mayonnaise, sour cream, heavy cream and crumbles of blue cheese. The flavors truly combine and come together when you let it sit in the refrigerator for some time or even overnight, if you have enough time. However, if you are in a rush or are craving a blue cheese dressing at that certain moment, you can also enjoy it right away.
Salads or wings are probably the first thing that pop into your head when you think of blue cheese dressing. You're right! This homemade salad dressing is delicious poured over an iceberg wedge salad with bacon crumbles. Salad and cheese pair too well together! If you love the combination of sweet and savory, we recommend you add fruit and nuts such as blueberry and walnuts to your keto salad. However, this low carb blue cheese dressing is very versatile and can also be used as a sauce on meat and chicken or as a delicious dip for buffalo cauliflower, wings, an assortment of vegetables or keto crackers. You can even serve it as a blue cheese sauce on burgers! This dressing is also great to serve when having guests over for a dinner party. Due to this dressing being both high in fats and in protein, even if you add it to a salad, it will keep you fuller for a lot longer than most other dressings!
The best thing about this dressing is that it only takes 5 minutes to make and you probably already have all the ingredients in your pantry and refrigerator! For the minimal amount of work you have to put into this recipe, you will receive great tasting results and the dressing can be used for up to a week! Beware though, as this dressing tastes so delicious and satisfying, you will probably want to add it to every meal. This dressing can be made as chunky as you want it to be. If you prefer it to be smoother, keep on mixing for a bit longer and the texture will become creamier. This will also allow the blue cheese crumbles to release more of their pungent tangy flavor into the creamy dressing.
There are various ready made blue cheese dressings available on the market. However, we believe that nothing beats a homemade blue cheese dressing. Store bought dressing might be convenient, but it usually does not have the same tangy flavor as when you make it yourself. Moreover, with homemade salad dressings, you can switch up the consistency to your liking and choose your favorite blue cheese to add to the recipe!
Is Store Bought Blue Cheese Dressing Keto?
Most store bought blue cheese dressings are low in carbs but many dressing manufacturers add sugars, preservatives, vegetable oils and other additives to their dressings. Vegetable oil can be inflammatory and isn't healthy, so even though the dressings might be low in carbs, they are not recommended on a keto diet. This recipe uses avocado mayo instead as it is a much healthier alternative while still being high in fats and low carb. Store bought blue cheese dressings which you can find within the fridge section are typically more fresh and healthier as they contain less preservatives. However, with that being said, you would still need to have a look at the ingredients list on the bottle of blue cheese dressing, just to be sure. And always be aware of how much added sugar is in a store bought dressing.
Carbs in Blue Cheese
Blue cheese is naturally low in carbs, making it the perfect food to eat on a keto diet. A serving of blue cheese, which is around 1 ounce or 28g, typically only has 0.7g net carbs. There are certain types of blue cheese which are not as keto friendly as they are made with buttermilk which is slightly higher in carbs. Just make sure you read the nutrition label before selecting your blue cheese and try to find the one that is low carb.
What is Blue Cheese?
Blue Cheese is a type of cheese made with cow's milk, sheep's milk or goat's milk and ripened with cultures of a mold called Penicillium. It is called blue cheese particularly because of the color it has. There are several types of blue cheese and the flavor varies from one type of blue cheese to the other. The most famous types of blue cheese are Gorgonzola, Roquefort and Stilton and you can use these types of cheeses in this keto dressing recipe. Blue cheese is either a love or hate type of food due to its sharp and salty taste.
Storage
This easy keto blue cheese dressing can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for around 5-7 days. Due to the amount of dairy found in this dressing, we would not recommend freezing as it would separate and lose its creaminess. It would be better to prepare a smaller batch and then make more later on. After all, it only takes 5 minutes to make! This low carb dressing recipe only makes 1 cup, so it will go fast.
To check if the dressing has gone bad, all you would need to do is smell it as it would have a funky, almost sour smell.
Substitute for Mayo
Our recipe uses avocado mayo as it is a healthier alternative to regular mayo. However, if you dislike or prefer not to use mayonnaise, you can add more sour cream or a low carb greek yogurt. The taste might vary slightly due to the fact that sour cream and greek yogurt have a more sour taste, but the consistency of the blue cheese dressing will still come out rich and creamy.
